Are you aware of The American Heart Association recommendations limiting the amount of added sugar intake to no more than half of your daily discretionary calories allowance? For most women, the recommendation is no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons of sugar.
A diet that consists of high sugar intake elevates blood glucose (blood sugar) especially if your diet is low in fiber. Sugar is also linked to elevated blood pressure. High-added sugar consumption may impair glucose tolerance which means you are in a prediabetic state. Added sugars may contribute to insulin resistance which is when your body does not respond well to insulin which helps to lower blood sugar. Those who have a high sugar intake diet are at higher risk of diabetes.
What is Prediabetic?
Millions of older Americans have “prediabetes” according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This means their glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes. People with prediabetes have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes and having a heart-attack or stroke.

1) A healthy diet consisting of lots of vegetables, fruit, and healthy protein. 2) Limiting both sugary and starchy carbohydrates. 3) A Consistent exercise, staying active helps lower blood glucose levels and it improves insulin sensitivity. 4) Take prescribed medications. 5) If you smoke, QUIT. 6) Manage your cholesterol levels. 7) Manage your blood pressure. 8) Attend schedule appointment with your doctor. 9) Maintain a healthy weight. 72% of adults in the United States are overweight or have obesity. 10) Document your vitals to share with other health care partners.
According to the CDC, lifestyle changes can cut your risk as much as 71% for those 60 years of age or older. Being prediabetes is a condition to take serious. Work with your health care team to take control of your health and reverse prediabetes.
